(Another) New Addiction
As you might have noticed, I quickly become addicted to alot of things. Anything really. This time it’s books. Well, allow me to clarify. I’ve always been addicted to books, this isn’t a new fad. I love to read when I get the chance, which hasn’t been very often these past few years. Normally when I go back to university for another semester, I won’t have the time to read anything until exams are all finished but this semester I have been fortunate enough to find a course which forces me to read … and the books are awesome!!
I’ve never been a massive Science Fiction fan. I have never seen a full episode of Star Trek and I think I’ve only seen one of the star Wars movies. (Is it a requirement for Sci-Fi shows to have “star” in the name or something?) When I was choosing classes to take for my final semester of university, out of interest I choose one called Speculative Fiction. I’m very glad that I did because I am enjoying it possibly more than any other course I have taken in my entire university career. Except Human Sexuality. That one takes the ultimate prize. Anyway, this Speculative Fiction class has opened up a whole new genre to me that I had not previously known existed.
We’re mainly reading books on single sex, utopian societies which provide some very interesting scenarios and possibilities. The last book we read (which was also my favorite of the course so far) was The Handmaid’s Tale. Seriously. Read it. I had heard of it before but completely dismissed it. A really engaging story. Next up is Ethan of Athos
and while I haven’t started it yet, it looks promising. I’ll have to let you know what it’s like when I finish it.
